Anna Krauklis

Bio

Anna is a visual artist based in Riga, Latvia, working with fine art photography, digital collage, and mixed media.

She studied graphic design at the Moscow Art School in Memory of 1905. Her professional background spans illustration, graphic design, art direction, and photography.

Her artistic practice brings together photography, historical painting, archival imagery, and contemporary digital techniques. Drawing on her experience across different visual disciplines, she creates images that move between the familiar and the unexpected, often questioning the relationship between appearance and reality.

Krauklis has participated in group exhibitions in Moscow and Krasnoyarsk and served as a jury member for photography competitions.

In 2021, she founded Fine Art Photography School, an educational project dedicated to exploring photography as an artistic medium and connecting photographic practice with art history.

Artist Statement

My work begins with images that seem familiar: a portrait, a domestic interior, a historical painting, an old photograph. I am interested in what happens when these images are taken out of their original context and placed into a new visual reality.

Photography allows me to work with the visible world, while collage and digital manipulation give me the freedom to question its apparent certainty. I combine photographic elements with fragments of painting, archival materials, decorative patterns, and unexpected objects, creating images in which different periods, meanings, and visual languages coexist.

A recurring subject in my work is the distance between outward appearance and inner experience. I am interested in the emotions and relationships that remain hidden behind familiar social roles, particularly within domestic life. In some of my projects, ordinary settings become spaces of psychological tension, where seemingly harmless objects acquire disturbing meanings.

Another important direction of my practice is memory. Working with historical photographs and visual references, I explore how we imagine a past we have never experienced ourselves, and how personal and collective histories become intertwined.

I do not see photography as a medium limited to recording reality. For me, it is a starting point for constructing new images, where recognizable details can coexist with the impossible, and where visual contradictions open up new interpretations.
